Evaluating institutional variations of educational systems

This team aims to evaluate the impact of educational institutions, such as early selection, vocational orientation, private schooling, standardization, on the realization of core tasks of educational systems. In particular the focus will be on whether there are trade-offs in educational design, which would be the case when a particular institution would foster the realization of one particular goal of schooling (e.g. prepare for the labour market) but at the same time hinders others (such as offering equality of opportunity). We aim to bring economists and sociologists together that work on these topics with various data sources, including PISA, TIMSS, PIRLS and IALS. In addition to a workshop in June 2009, preparatory work will be done to systematize and operationalize different dimensions of educational systems which can then be beneficial to the Equalsoc community.
